Title: Unreserved
Author: Michelle Dare
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Cover Design: Designs by Dana
Publication Date: July 27, 2018

Life was so predictable. Alicia dedicated herself to work and spent her nights alone, rarely venturing out. She was content with her expanded role in her father’s business, even if she was lonely. She’d sworn off men, until a sexy detective made her reevaluate what she really wanted.
Bodyguard duty was not why Rider became a detective. But, orders were orders. When he saw the blonde beauty, he silently thanked the chief for his new mission. One-night stands were all he’d wanted before, but Alicia sparked something primal inside him.
Rider quickly put the pieces together—Alicia had been hurt, so she hid her heart. His goal became proving his love for her was unreserved. Then his closest friend revealed a secret, blindsiding Rider. A decision had to be made, and the outcome would change their lives. Life wasn’t so predictable anymore.

GUEST POST

Question:  What made you want to be a writer/author?

I started out as a reader then became a blogger. I love reading and romance is my go-to genre. One day I got an idea for a romance novel. Once I started writing, I couldn't stop. After my first book was done, I had more characters talking to me, wanting their books written. The ideas have increased since then. I have notebooks, notes on my phone, Kindle, and laptop. I have ideas everywhere. Four years later, I still love writing.

Michelle Dare is a romance author. Her stories range from sweet to sinful and from new adult to fantasy. There aren’t enough hours in the day for her to write all of the story ideas in her head. When not writing or reading, she’s a wife and mom living in eastern Pennsylvania. One day she hopes to be writing from a beach where she will never have to see snow or be cold again.

Guest Post by NJ Walters, Author of Embracing Silence!!

The Anti-Hero
By
N. J. Walters

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. There is the brave hero who will stand side-by-side with the heroine to face down any foe. He’ll use whatever weapons he has at hand—a clever wit, sword, gun, tire iron—to rescue the heroine and vanquish the villain. Then there is the everyday hero, the man who does what needs doing whether it’s taking out the garbage, changing a tire, or helping the single mom with her kids. Maybe it’s the corporate raider who reforms for just the right woman. There are all kinds of heroes and each of them has a place in romance literature.

I don’t know about most readers, but I’m partial to the anti-hero. An anti-hero is a central character in a story, movie, or drama who lacks conventional heroic attributes. It’s that brooding, dark male who is reluctant to help but does it anyway. In spite of his penchant for being a loner and not caring about the world, he is drawn to the heroine and into her life. He may grumble and complain, but he does it because of his own code of honor, and not because of anyone else’s idea of right and wrong.

This guy is a hero in spite of himself. He doesn’t think of himself as a hero. He doesn’t want to be a hero. Yet, somehow, it happens as he becomes more and more entangled in the heroine’s life.

I’ve written a lot of these men. What can I say? I can’t help myself. These men are fascinating to watch as they evolve. Tienan—the male lead in my post-apocalyptic, futuristic novel Embracing Silence—fits the bill of the anti-hero. He’s a genetically and computer enhanced assassin who has escaped his creators and only has one thing on his mind—vengeance. He doesn’t trust anyone and certainly won’t let anyone stand in the way of his goal. When he realizes some is tracking him, his immediate thought is to kill them. Then he meets Silence and everything changes…

EMBRACING SILENCE

In the erotic first installment of the Project Alpha trilogy, a violent wasteland becomes the backdrop for two assassins who arouse in each other much more than fear and suspicion

Earth 2133

The hunter becomes the hunted

Tienan is Alpha One, created by the privileged few who live shielded from a lawless land. He's been honed into the perfect involuntary weapon—vengeful, adaptable and ruthless. Finally free of the evil organization that created him, he's on the run with one option to survive outside the Gate: avoid recapture, even if that means killing again. But the sexy little stalker following him is too delicious to take out.

The captive becomes the captor

Silence is a tracker with the Resistance, a rebel force amassed to end the reign of terror. For Silence to trust Tienan is a risk, but to resist his brutal prowess is impossible.

Enemies become lovers

As raw sexual need takes over, alliances will shift and treachery could become as potent—and as lethal—as desire.

Guest Post by Natalie Corbett-Sampson, Author of It Should Have Been a #GoodDay!!

I would like to welcome my wonder and amazing friend Natalie Corbett Sampson to my blog today!!! Yes, I did tell her she could write about octopi, I was not kidding!!  But she went with something else!!

I can't wait to read the book Natalie!!
****
Thanks for having me Jess! You suggested I could write about ‘anything’. My first choice was octopi. They are so awesome. But then I got lost in a dark hole of youtube videos of colour changing eight legged sea creatures and realized not only is it probably not the most on-topic conversation but also if I started your readers down that road they may never come back.

Then I thought, what about the cover? No one has talked about the cover yet! Everyone knows you don’t judge a book by it’s cover, but com’on. Everyone judges books by the covers!

My beautiful cover was done by Valerie Bellamy from Dog-Ear Book Design (http://www.dog-earbookdesign.com). I met Valerie in Starbucks, with my own designs and ideas. She was very polite and looked at my sketches, wrote down my thoughts and after a few weeks she sent me some designs. The first two were based on my ideas, lots of font and bold colour, they were quite nice. The third blew me away. It had nothing to do with what we had discussed. It was perfect.

What does a bird have to do with the story? The bird can be connected to the mascot of a commonly used social media platform. It’s also in reference to Harper Lee’s story that Henry and Thomas read for their English class. Valerie imagined Henry as the mockingbird, the innocent that is targeted and destroyed with violence. (And when I say that, don’t think I’m spoiling any part of the story!) I loved these connections so much that I changed Henry’s Tuesday shirt from red to blue. Well first we tried to change the cover tones from blue to red but it totally didn’t work.

I also loved the way Valerie used space to convey emotion. The lack of content on the cover, around the smaller font, the bird, is haunting and beautiful. The single feather on the back always makes me think of a void, the silence of that feather settling down, as if the world has stopped around it. It is the perfect echo of the story.

And in the end I did get to have a part in the design. The font Valerie used for the cover did not have a hashtag, so I got to draw one. Yay me!

Thank you Natalie for visiting my blog today!!  I love the cover!!  It Should Have Been A #GoodDay is available on February 28th, but you can pre-order HERE through Amazon!!

EXCERPT
HOT excerpt (from Volume One- DreamZ) Why? Why the torture? Each and every single night since I became a woman I awaken sweating, panting, hot and bothered from the pure sexual torture. Many times with my hand rubbing my most intimate place. A dream, so many dreams. Each one is different, but all contain the same faceless dark haired stranger.
“UGH!”
The only things I know for sure is he is tall, has raven black hair, the same color as mine, but much shorter. He has the most beautiful eyes I’ve ever seen. Glowing eyes that seem to be able to see into my soul. My heart’s deepest desires and he always grants them to me without pause. It was strange at first, seeing him and yet not. Not being able to make out his facial features, except for his eyes. I got used to it throughout the years, I guess. One thing I DO know, is the way he makes me feel, always!
So much passion, heat and desire. He makes me feel beautiful, irreplaceable and wanted in a way, I imagine, every woman wants to feel.
Frustration at its finest. This latest dream seemed more realistic than all of the others. I still feel the ripples on my skin from his touch; the most intimate touch I’ve ever experienced, the only touch from a male I’ve had in such a manner. The goose bumps are just starting to go away. His caress is always so sensual and arousing. My mouth is still dry from all of the panting I’ve done, my panties are drenched and my heart is still pounding.
No words could ever describe my desire to meet this man of my dreams. That is—if he truly does exist. I’m going to be 25 years old and have zero sexual experience. I’d give anything to feel even a portion of what I’ve felt during these amazingly satisfying yet torturous dreams. Anything!
When I finally do get out of bed and stroll towards the bathroom, the floors feel extra cold on my overheated feet. “Definitely starting off with a cold shower.” I turn on the water full blast cold, toss my sleep shirt and panties in the hamper and brace for the shock of cold water against my flesh. “ACK!” Holy crap does it sting. But hey, it works. My body no longer feels the intense heat of arousal, just the residual tingles left after the orgasm, still lingering along my body. I fully submerge after adding some hot water to the mix, when I hear banging on the bathroom door. I jump slightly and slip a bit, almost landing flat on my ass. Luckily, I have fast reflexes and right myself quickly.

GUEST POST Zombies!
Wunder Series - Guest Post Photo 1
What are they? Well, they’re the walking dead, duh! Seriously though, the zombies (aka the infected) in Wunder have been terrorizing the planet for over 30 years. They are gruesome, strong, and much faster than the average zombie you see on television. They are also a lot smarter. They know how to trap their prey and the best way to get them down for the kill. They crave protein due to its ability to strengthen their muscles and improve their physical condition. So, when they attack their prey (humans), they start off with consuming whatever blood they can get and work their way deep, to get to the marrow of their prey’s bones.
The origin of the contagion is not yet known, but it is under constant investigation. Some say it is alien based, something that was brought to the planet by other worldly beings with hopes all humans would die and the aliens would take over, live and flourish as if we were never here. That’s not yet been proven.
Others say, that it was created as a biochemical weapon from one of Russia’s or Korea’s mad scientists that are out for destruction of anywhere but their country, so they can have all control. But those theories are… Just theories, nuff said.
One thing we do know for sure is Wunder is a rarity. How many people do you know that can actually say they are part zombie? Exactly! NONE.
She now fights alongside some others, to help all that are terrorized by the infected to stay alive and uninfected. She doesn’t see them as kin or anything of the like. She sees them as enemies, targets, needing to just be…gone. And that’s what she’s trained to do for a majority of her life. Taught by her 100% human father and his comrades. Kill or be killed!

THE GUEST POST:
I used to dream about the day I’d see my book in print. I planned the party right down to the menu and my wardrobe. The guest list was a veritable who’s who in the industry. All the cute guys would be there…think Max Irons, Robert Pattinson, and Henry Cavill (each one practically begging to play the lead if…make that when…the book was made into a movie.) And who was I to stop a handsome movie star from flirting if he was so inclined? Exactly. I’d smile, blush, flirt, and bask in the wonder of my moment in the spotlight.
The problem was I hadn’t finished a single book at that time. Oh, I’d started several, I’m great at starting projects, but I hadn’t finished a single one. I was young, not very disciplined, and had pie in the sky dreams of book signings, cocktail parties, and hobnobbing with other “famous” writers.
Boy, was I naïve.
Then came the reality check. The realization that you had to finish the book before planning the accolades. I set aside my dreams of fame and fortune and instead, dreamed of a day when just one query letter would come back with something other than “no, thank you.” I wanted a yes.
The rejections used to make me cry. Ok, so they still make me cry. But for a minute there, I forgot I was a writer. I put the pen down, saved the manuscript to a file, and let the proverbial dust collect.
And boy did the dust collect.
Then a friend gave me a nudge. Or a push. Whatever. She reminded me that rejection is painful for a brief moment…brief only because it’s an expected and necessary bump along our chosen path. Speed bumps designed to keep our heads from swelling.
Reminders that I need to continue to perfect the writing…even when I’m certain I’m good at what I do.
So I sent out a new bunch of queries. A new set of hopes and dreams into the great beyond. And low and behold, I got my yes.
And I finally had that party. Oh, it was quite a bit smaller—no one famous showed up. But I had a cake. And a signed a few books. And I felt like a princess for a day. And okay, I did close my eyes for a few minutes and pretend I was hobnobbing with the stars.
After all, why dream if you’re not going to dream big.
~~~~~~
Oh Erica!!  I love you!!  Thank you so much for visiting my blog today!! I have to get back to my book and get it finished!!!  I also have a friend who keeps giving me the kick in the butt that I need when I lose my focus!!
Also... you and I had the same dream about when we become published authors!  The dreams we have....
THE EXCERPT
Prologue
“You’re too sexy, my ass!” I tried to tune out the Right Said Fred ringtone as I fished my fiancé’s cell phone from the pocket of his discarded Dockers. I glared at the flashing caller ID. “You just don’t give up, do you?”
That was lucky number thirteen. Thirteen missed calls in the span of an hour. Thirteen calls he was unable to answer.
Because of me.
After pressing ignore one more time, I shoved the phone back into the pocket where it belonged, hoping it would muffle the sound somewhat. I didn’t know why I didn’t just turn off the damn thing. I’d endured his ridiculous ring tone more times than anyone should have to, obviously determined to punish myself. Between the maddening song and the horrible smell, I certainly felt punished. Even if it wasn’t nearly enough.
Way down deep in my bones, I knew my life had been forever changed. Even if I could somehow fix things—put them back to normal—nothing would be the same again. Not ever.
Swallowing against the crystal ball-sized lump in my throat, I dropped Matt’s pants where I’d found them, along with his shirt, his boxers, and his shoes, and I collapsed onto the rumpled blankets on the bed.
That sort of thing didn’t happen in the real world. Only small children or crazy people believed in… no, I refused to even think the word, let alone say it. It’s impossible. But I’d seen it with my own eyes, and whatever it was, it definitely wasn’t normal.
My scruffy housecat made another frantic orbit around my feet as the phone sounded again, the self-centered lyrics looping, making me cringe. Apparently, he’d also grown weary of the tune.
If only I could say the choice of ring tone was ironic, a product of his wry sense of humor. But he didn’t have much of a sense of humor. Matthew Green was exactly that arrogant. Despite every despicable thing he’d done to me, every insult, lie, and betrayal that had led us there, I truly wished Matt could answer his stupid phone himself. Unfortunately, wishing didn’t seem to be on my side that morning.
Stifling a groan, I pulled myself from the warmth of the bed to dig the phone out of Matt’s pocket again. Geez, persistent much? With a deep, cleansing breath, I mashed down the button to accept the call.
“Matt! Where are you?” Matt’s receptionist, Ginger, snapped before I had a chance to say hello. “Friday’s your busiest day. Do you have any idea what time it is? You’ve already missed two appointments.”
Even without caller ID, I would have recognized her breathy Betty Boop voice. She sounded as though she’d been sucking helium all morning. I didn’t know her well, but I suspected she was banging my fiancé.
“We’ll be lucky if there’s enough time for a quickie before the next patient arrives,” she continued in a whisper.
Yep… definitely banging him.
“And another thing.” Her sweet baby voice morphed into a feral growl. “Candy’s been standing outside your office all morning. I thought you said you were done with her? I’m not kidding, Matt, if I find out you’re still screwing her, I’m going to cut off your balls.”
Apparently, I was engaged to a pathological cheater. Of course, I hadn’t known that when I agreed to marry him. There were a lot of things I didn’t know about Matt. Then again, there was a lot I didn’t know about me.
“Well? Aren’t you going to say anything?”
 “Uh… hi, Ginger.” I cleared my throat and resisted the urge to “say anything.” “This is Ivie. Matt can’t come to the phone. I… uh... don’t think he’s going to be able to… uh… make it into work today.” I managed to stammer through the basics without my voice cracking.
“Oh, hi, Ivie.” Her voice changed again; she sounded as if she’d been sucking lemons. She didn’t even have the decency to be embarrassed. “What’s wrong with Matt? He hasn’t missed a day in… Actually, I don’t think he’s ever called in sick.”
My eyes darted to the closed bathroom door, and I shuddered. “He’s really not feeling like himself today.” Understatement of the century.
“Is he sick?”
“Um… I definitely don’t think anyone wants what he has.” I tiptoed around the answer. I wasn’t good at coy, but I gave it my best shot.
“Oh… Well, in that case, maybe it’s best if he stays home.” I could almost see her coiling a lock of her thick red hair around her finger as she spoke. “Just tell him I hope he feels better, and not to worry. I’ll reschedule his appointments for him. Do you think he’ll be well enough to come in Monday?”
I tamped down a flicker of panic. “I really hope so.” But I seriously doubt it.
After listening to Ginger rant for a minute about missed appointments and the difficult task of rescheduling, I ended the call, staring at the bathroom door as if I expected a silent command to open it. I closed my eyes and tried to imagine the door swinging wide and my fiancé sauntering out. I popped open one eye. The door hadn’t moved—not even a crack.
For far too long, I’d avoided that room. With three tentative steps, I closed the distance between myself and the master bathroom, covering my mouth and nose with one hand as I cracked the door. I’d almost gotten used to the foul odor in the bedroom. It was bad but not unbearable. The stench in the bathroom was overwhelming. The fumes poured out, bringing tears to my eyes. The small space reeked worse than when I’d locked him in there last night. It smelled as if someone had cooked up a potion of burning tires and rotten eggs in a boiling vat of sour ammonia, and even that comparison wasn’t quite bad enough.
Blinking back the sting of tears, I scanned the room. I didn’t see him anywhere, just a puddle that looked suspiciously like urine in one corner and in the other, a makeshift bed fashioned out of—were those my good bath towels?
No Matt.
A quick rush of adrenaline kick-started my heart. What’s happened to him now? This is bad. Very, very bad. As if things weren’t bad enough already. What sort of person was I? What I’d done was unspeakable, so horrible even I didn’t know what I’d done.
Just as I was about to have a full-blown panic attack, he slinked out from behind the hamper. I should have been relieved he was still alive, but I wasn’t sure if his current state was much better. He stared up at me—his beady little black eyes blinking in the harsh fluorescent light—so much smaller than he used to be and covered in a thick pelt of black and white fur. My fiancé.
The skunk.
THE GUEST POST:
One Writer’s Love: Research!
By Carole Brown
One of the aspects I love about writing is research.
Everything a writer pens down should have validity. It should be as true as we can make it, as real as possible. Scenes, places, descriptions, even mentions, need to be factual or at least have a basis for factuality.
It’s easy to get so absorbed in research. I forget the time and whittle away hours in reading the knowledge that keeps coming. It’s entrancing to learn and store away downloaded/written/typed/saved (thick) notebooks full of information. Much more than I need, for whatever particular reason I began the research. (Rainy day material!)
For an example:
In The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman I researched:
  • West Virginia
  • Tattoos
  • Cults
  • Names
  • Legal matters
  • Biblical history
Reasons? Let me give you some simple ones:
  • West Virginia: the locale of the story had to be in a particular setting. One secluded enough to hide/or escape local authorities immediate attention. I used magazines, internet resources, interviews with WV citizens, and personal information.
  • Tattoos? The cult I created needed a symbol to show their marriage rites were accepted. But it also needed to vibe with the first chapter--a little girl who sees the tattoo and is afraid of it. Though there’s a tattoo parlor not too far away, I mainly used the internet and writing buddies to decide this.
  • Cults: how do they think? What ritualistic actions do they do? How far will they go? Talked to those involved in cults and used lots of internet studies.
  • Names: I wanted names that fit with the setting. Baby books was my main resource.
  • Legal matters: to create the proper punishment for Caralynne, it was necessary to see what would be in store for her. A critique partner who is a writer and also a prosecuting attorney served my needs with this one.
  • Biblical history: because the cult originated from a Biblical era/history, I had to check on the right event from the Bible and scriptures to make sure everything was clear for touches of the cult’s origins in the book. The Bible, a writing friend, and my husband helped me with this.
Although there were many more situations why these items of research were necessary, it gives us a glance into the research that went into the book.
I’ve found if I do my research early, it creates lots less tension and lots more ease in getting the first draft down. That’s why every time I begin a new novel, I rub my hands in glee (figuratively!) and promptly speculate where my research will take me this time. A country where I’ve never been? A study of creatures with which I’m not that familiar? To the moon and back?
Who knows?
Happy Reading!
Excerpt from The Redemption of Caralynne Hayman by Carole Brown:
The midnight air cooled, and Dayne pressed the button to roll up both windows in his car. Cara shivered and snuggled deeper into the plush seat.
“Are you asleep?”
Dayne’s soft whisper rolled over her like a silk blanket. “No. Thinking.”
“A penny for them.”
The urge to share almost overwhelmed her. How wonderful to place some of this depressing burden on Dayne’s wide, strong shoulders. She let the wish—the weakness—drift away.
“Worrying about Abby. Wondering if she’ll be okay.”
“You’re a friend anyone would be glad to have, Cara. I see the caring, loyal, and responsible person you are, the one you show everyone.” Dayne steered around a slower-moving car. “But sometimes I’d like a glimpse of the part you keep hidden.”
The heaviness in her heart lifted, and for a moment, she envisioned herself as a carefree young person experiencing life to the full.
“I don’t know what that would be.” She closed her eyes. “I’m a foolish romantic.”
“A romantic is foolish?”
“Dreaming impossible dreams, wishing for fables, is unrealistic and foolish. I’ve always had a tendency to imagine what could be, what could happen. I suppose because I like beautiful things.” She chuckled. “See the moon and the star-studded sky? Instead of ignoring its beauty, I get the shivers. I wonder if a different world lives in another universe. A colony of people who know only goodness and peace and happiness.”
“I think this side of you is beautiful, and I love it.”
“You don’t love all sides of me?”
“I love—now you’re fishing.” He cleared his throat and his hand slid across the space between them and touched hers. “You’re beautiful.”
Cara pulled her hand from his. Too much danger for her. “Tell me about some of the things you experienced while you were gone. Were your studies hard? Did you like living in the city?”
“In some ways, but I missed the country. When I arrived home, I think I took the first deep breath I’d had in six years.”
“Did you meet many girls?”
She felt his quick glance. Felt the question hover in the air between them. What have I done? He’s not under obligation to answer my nosy questions. And what difference does it make anyhow?
“Do you mean did I date while away?”
At his words, the tension lessened. “You don’t have to answer the question. It’s none of my business.”
But I want to know.
Dayne pulled into her driveway and shut off the car. He slipped his arm on the back of the seat. “When is your meeting?”
Cara blinked but answered, “Tomorrow afternoon.”
“Want me to pick you up?”
“Thanks, but I’ll walk. It’ll give me time to reflect on how to behave while in the presence of such an august figure.” A hand flew up to cover her mouth. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to be so flip.”
“No problem. The fact is I came home carrying a bunch of my own questions.”
“You?”
“Me. More questions than answers.”
“How do we find the answers, Dayne? You graduated with honors in ministry, so if you don’t know the answers, how is someone like me who’s uneducated supposed to get answers?”
He gripped her hand again as if he would never let go. She heard his long drawn intake of breath.
“What would you have done if you’d had the chance to choose something else?”
“Are you serious? I’ve never taken time to think about could-be’s and would-be’s. As I said, there’s not much sense in wishing for what will never happen.”
“But if you could have …”
“I don’t know. I’d mountain climb. Probably fly. Own my own private plane. Do rescue work.”
“What else?” His interest spurred her on. How long had it been since she’d had someone to share nonsense with?
“I’d learn to parachute and hang glide for fun and anything else to get me off the ground and into the air.”
“You crazy girl. Mind if I join you?”
Cara rested her head against the back of the seat.
His hand stirred beside her.
“I am crazy, aren’t I?”
He slipped his arm around her and tugged lightly until she gave in and rested her head on his shoulder.
“You know it’s not too late to experience your dreams.”
“What do you mean? Elder Simmons would never allow me to do that.”
A pause. Dayne stroked her hand with one finger. “Do it anyway.”
“Don’t encourage me, Dayne. Please. You don’t know—” With a sob, she straightened and flung open the door.
Dayne ran from his side of the car and grabbed her shoulders. “Cara. Cara, don’t cry. I’m doing my best to work on the elders. Trust me.” He cupped her chin, tilted it, and stared into her eyes.
She gave a shaky nod. “I do.”
Mostly.
With a thumb he wiped away the tears from her cheeks. “I wish—”
For me?
“What do you wish?” Cara held her breath.
He took her shoulders for a moment, his grip tight, and then let his hands drop. “Nothing. Go on.”
She moved as if in a daze toward the lighted porch. She’d barely reached the steps when Dayne’s voice stopped her again.
“Cara?”
She stopped moving, her back still toward him.
“You asked me if I met any girls while away. I did. Several. But every time I tried to get romantic or think about girlfriends, all I could see were the beautiful blue-green eyes of someone back home. A very effective deterrent for romance.”
Was she hearing him correctly? Interpreting his words the way he meant them? Her body warmed, the frozenness melting as surely as if the sun was ridding the earth of a winter avalanche. Slowly she turned.
He lifted a hand and returned to his car.
She stared after him, depression gone.
