Saved by a Rake - Book Cover

SYNOPSIS
When Lady Rebecca Eversley is left ravished by the Earl of Newthorpe and facing ruination, she has the choice to point her pretty little nose in the air and face the gossips of the Ton or scurry off to the country to live out her life as an old maid. When she meets Lord Daniel Ramsey, a notorious rake, she decides on the former course of action.

Daniel has been given an ultimatum, marry before his father dies or lose the majority of his inheritance money. Rebecca seems the perfect candidate, especially once rumours about her start to circulate in the drawing rooms of Mayfair.

When Newthorpe is found dead on the morning of their wedding, the people they care about find themselves suspects in the case. Who murdered Newthorpe and can Rebecca ever get over what he did to her?

THE REVIEW
Lady Rebecca Eversley is a ruined woman.  When she is raped by the Earl of Newthorpe, her mother wants her to go to the family estate in the country.  Becky refuses, and is determined to not get the rumors going around get the better of her.  She is not to blame for what happened, but he has taken something from her she can not ever get back.  Her virginity.

When Lord Daniel Ramsey finds out what happened to her, he sets out to protect her.  Even after what has happened to her, she is still very innocent.  She is also terrified of being intimate with a man.  After Daniel asks for her hand, she assumes he will leave her alone and take mistresses instead.  Little does she know that he has plans of his own.  He has no intention of taking a mistress.  Daniel knows that he has to go slow and patient for Becky to trust him.

When Newthrope is found dead on her wedding day, she's relieved, but is also wondering who killed him.  She knows her family would do the killing themselves after what happened, especially her brother James.  On the trip to Daniel's family home in Scotland, she's terrified about being a lone with him. With extreme patience, Daniel shows her that not all men force themselves on women.  That there are men who are loving and kind.

The one thing that did disappoint me was there was nothing about them finally coming together as a married couple.  There was a lot of build up to it, but when the time came, it was completely skipped over.  Other then that, I really loved this book! Rebecca and Daniel had chemistry right from the beginning, and he made it his mission to be her protector right from the start.

Soon, Daniel and Rebecca realize their family is at risk.  Someone in Newthorpe's family believes they are responsible for his death and wants revenge.

I loved Daniel!  He really surprised me, and I loved when that happens.  Yes, he was a player, but also knew once he was married, there would be no other woman for him.  His wife was it for him.  His patience and understand where Rebecca's fears were seemed to be limitless.  Everytime she told him to get a mistress and leave her be, he stuck to his guns and continued to be make her trust him.

  EXCERPT
As his lips briefly touched hers, the carriage jolted, pushing him closer to her. He caught her around the waist to ensure she did not bounce off the seat, then, without thinking, covered her mouth with his.
He noted a moment’s hesitation from her before she moved her lips and reached up to tangle her gloved fingers in his curls. Tentatively she touched her tongue against his, causing him to stifle a groan. He had been without a woman for over a month and now his pretty little wife had her arms around him, kissing him as if she had done it a thousand times. She was a quick learner as she explored his mouth with her tongue, pressing herself closer to him.
Devil take it. He had been struggling all day to stop himself becoming aroused. Her wedding gown had been low cut and her stays showed her breasts off perfectly. He had been distracted throughout the service and the wedding breakfast as images of disrobing her later had flitted through his mind. He wanted to see those breasts again.
He unfastened the three buttons on her pelisse, peeling the material away to her side, then pulled out of the kiss and began to pepper light kisses along her jawline. God, he wanted her, and he was most definitely aroused now.
He kissed her neck and was about to place his hand over that beautiful inviting orb, when he sensed her tensing. He pulled away slowly, tugging the material of her pelisse back over her. When he looked into her eyes, they were bright with confusion, passion and fear, all clearly warring within her. He cursed himself for being too impatient. Then he cursed Newthorpe for what he had done and could not help thinking that death was too good for the blaggard.
“No. That’s the only word you ever have to say and I will stop,” he said simply.
“I am sorry, my lord. I just expected some time before… well I expected to wait until we were in the coaching inn tonight.”
“Yes, of course. It was very impatient of me. I beg your forgiveness.”
Rebecca nodded and looked out the window.
The streets of London rushed by as they headed for the Great North Road. He studied the view out of the other window, and they sat in silence for a long time. Eventually Rebecca spoke in a small voice which sounded as if she was on the verge of tears.
“I fear I will not make you a very good wife if a mere kiss frightens me.”
He turned and took her hand in his. He wanted her to be comfortable and not think he was going to pounce on her and ravish her at any given opportunity.
“I have no doubt that you will make a wonderful wife, Rebecca. You just need time and patience and I have an abundance of both.”
She turned large, tear-filled eyes towards him. “You should take a mistress as soon as we reach Scotland.”
He could not possibly have heard correctly. She was giving him permission to have a mistress? Surely not. But her mouth was set in a firm line as if she had made up her mind. A stab of hurt hit him. She thought of him as a rake who would be unfaithful.
He pursed his lips and considered her. What should he do? He wanted to rail at her and tell her he had no intention of being unfaithful. He had taken vows only a few hours previously and yet now she was giving him permission to break them. But maybe the idea of him having a mistress brought her comfort. She was clearly terrified of intimacy between a husband and wife.
“We shall discuss it once we reach Scotland, my lady. I have no wish to think beyond our present journey.”
“Do you not see that I can only ever tolerate the marriage bed for the sake of giving you an heir,” she wailed, pulling her hand away from his. “He ruined me in more ways than you can ever know.”
“You are only ruined if you allow him that power. A skilful lover could make you feel very different about certain aspects of a marriage.”
“Well, I have heard enough tales to know that you are a skilful lover, Lord Ramsey. But I think you should save it for your mistresses.” Her tone was almost venomous but he ignored it, knowing that it was fear that drove her.
She turned her head to look out of the window again. He was at a complete loss. She thought him almost as bad as Newthorpe. Well, not quite but she did not think he would be faithful. A long silence stretched out between them as he considered what to say to her. Her back was rigid, and she swiped at her cheek with one gloved hand.
“What he did to you…”
“What he did has destroyed me, and I am not sorry that he is dead. I wish I had been the one to kill him.”
“Please, Rebecca…”
She burst into tears and fished in her reticule for a handkerchief, he presumed. He held his out to her and with a large sob she accepted it. He untied her bonnet and threw it onto the seat opposite before gathering her in his arms.
She tried to move out of his grip but this time he held firm, knowing that she would accept his comfort, which she did, weeping as she buried her face in his coat.
As her sobs turned into sniffles, which turned into silence then light snuffles of sleep, he held her and wondered how he was going to help his beautiful young wife over her fear of physical love.
AUTHOR BIO:

Em was born and brought up in the Central Belt of Scotland and still lives there. She was told as a child she had an over active imagination—as if that is a bad thing. She’s traded her dreams of owning her own island, just like George in the Famous Five to hoping to meet her own Mr Darcy one day. But her imagination remains the same.

Unfortunately, Em was put off reading and writing by school and although she rediscovered her love of reading many years ago, she only tried her hand at writing again in 2011. After a year of writing fan fiction, she wrote an original short story for an anthology. This was followed up with two more shorts and 4 novella length books, all published under a pen name. Having fallen in love with a new sub-genre, courtesy of books by Mary Balogh and Lynsay Sands, she decided to try her hand at her new favourite genre for reading—regency.

Having bitten the bullet, she feels she has found her home in the 19th century, and it does give her an excuse to watch Colin Firth in a pair of buff breeches and riding books ad infinitum.

Review of Game Plan by Natalie Corbett-Sampson!!

SYNOPSIS
"Poignant, well-paced and compassionate, Game Plan is an achingly real look at how two families cope when life doesn't go as planned." Tish Cohen, bestselling author of The Truth About Delilah Blue and Inside Out Girl.

Just because the play goes wrong, doesn't mean you quit the game.

Ella Parker seems to have everything: great friends, an awesome family and a star position on her high school basketball team. The only thing missing from her life is a boyfriend. That changes once she catches the eye of Sam Cleveland. With Sam by her side Ella has it all. When a drunken night results in an unwanted pregnancy, her perfect life is turned upside down and she’s faced with an impossible decision.

Katherine Frayne has always wanted to be a mother. But with the last results of her in vitro fertilization pointing to no chance of a baby, her hopes are dashed. Then her husband Danny suggests they adopt. At first Kat is resistant, but she soon warms to the idea.

Ella and Katherine must navigate their lives amidst tough decisions, the consequences of which not only affect them but those they love the most.

THE REVIEW

I was honored to read this book, because Nat is a friend of mine.  We went to junior high and highschool together, and reading this book made me so damn proud of her!!

I loved this book so much!  First, because I know, on a personal level, what Ella Parker was going through.  I know that terrified indecision of making the right choice.  When faced with the choice, it's hard to make the choice between your heart and your mind.

This story was about two journeys that connect at the end.  The first was Ella's journey.  She's seventeen, and she has her friends and she has basketball.  She knows what she wants to do with her future.  When Sam Cleveland takes notice of her, she's happy for the attention.  One bad drunken decision at a Halloween party changes her life forever.

Katherine Frayne has only ever wanted one thing.  To be a mother.  She's devastated by the fact that she can't carry her own.  After some convincing from her husband Danny, they plan to adopt.  She's reluctant at first, but soon realizes that no matter what, the baby would be theirs.

Ella is scared about what is going to happen in her life.  Can she take care of a baby?  What about her plans to go to University?  When she tells Sam, his reaction is the opposite of what she was hoping for. He doesn't want it, and tells her to get rid of it.  When she refuses, he not only abandons her, but makes her highschool life a living hell.  Also, friends who she thought would be there turn on her.  One in particular becomes especially cruel to her.

Her parents support her, but she hates knowing she disappointed them.  Her brother and his best friend Charlie are there as is her friend Alex.  When Charlie asks her out on a date without her brother Ben, she's reluctant, but she goes.  Charlie soon proves he's in it for real, and makes his feelings known.  It doesn't make matters better at school, but she's happy.

Ella knows she must make a choice on what to do.  Keep the baby of give it up for adoption.  After a lot of thinking about what to do, she decides to give that baby up.  She has dreams  of going to school, and knows that can't happen with a baby.  Charlie offers a solution, but she knows this is what needs to be done.

Meanwhile, Katherine and Danny are trying to stay patient in the waiting game for a baby.  Her feelings are up and down, but she knows she must wait for her baby.  She's isn't patient, but she understands it's a process that needs to be done.  After a few close calls, they hear they've been picked as parents for a baby girl.  They are excited, but also fearful the mother will change her mind.

There were times this book almost brought me to tears, because after Ella had the baby, her indecision about keeping her was spot on!  You juggle with the... Can I do it?  Can I really give my baby away? I thought I was abandoning mine.. but in the end you're not.  You're giving the baby the life you can't.

I loved Charlie.  At first, he's her friend, and stands up for her when it's needed, but he becomes so much more.  He's her support system when she needs it, and stands behind her decision to adopt.  He even makes a suggestion that tells you what kind of guy he is, and just how much he loves Ella.  It makes her love all the more, but stands by her decision.

I love that Ella had the support system she did.  Without that, her decision would have been that much harder for her to make.  Her parents were there for her, despite their disappointment.  Her friends that did stand by her kept her busy, and protected her against everyone who was set out to hurt her.

I don't make it known, but I know the feeling of loss that Ella felt.  I was like her... abortion wasn't an option for me.  I just couldn't do it.  I always felt that it wasn't the baby's fault that I got pregnant, so why should he pay the price for it?  In the end, it was his life that was most important to me.  Yes, I could love him, but could I give him the life he deserved?  I couldn't... and I found two amazing people who could.  I know where he is, which is what I wanted.  He wasn't going anywhere if I didn't know that much.

SYNOPSIS

This was supposed to be an easy case...

Sémya Slotin had spent the last three years living in London with her best friend Polliannah Koch staying away from solving cases. After Hawaii, she was taking a break from puzzles, cases and mysteries that could potentially get her killed. Instead, she had been doing her second and third favorite things, drinking and selling expensive vintage wines and having earthshattering sex with the mysterious, sexy, beautiful but ever so secretive Josh Heinz. Life in London was good….until her funds ran out. Too much wine drinking, not enough wine selling!

When fashion designer and adoptive mother, Annika Slotin, summoned her back to Paris to hire her for what Sémya considered being the easiest case of her amateur sleuth career, all she could think of and seeing was money signs and a well-deserved Cuban holiday once it was solved.

What Sémya didn’t see was her stumbling on the fresh corpse of supermodel Johanna Cartier. She didn’t think that male model turned fashion designer Julian Marais-Caldwin, who also happened to be Sémya’s ex, would be suspected of brutally murdering her. Johanna was his girlfriend, his muse and he loved her. Sémya didn’t see the dead bodies piling up or the conspiracy theories.

Sémya was a little rusty. But then again, it was supposed to be an easy case and she was going to solve it. One vintage wine at a time… Sémya Slotin was officially back in business!

EXCERPT
Polliannah knew that Sémya would go all Nancy Drew on her tonight. After playing nice with a few guests from the fashion house, she discreetly slipped to the hallway and gestured her to come with her. “I just need to see what’s going on over there?” she whispered as she was removing her shoes.
“Is this not a felony?” she asked Sémya. And she wasn’t going to remove her shoes! Sémya frowned back. How could it be a felony, they are not breaking and entering. They are already inside the house. Every step she was taking was making a sound. “Sorry,” she whispered when Sémya hushed her for the fourth time.
“This house is a maze,” she said opening the third room. It was yet another bedroom, another empty bedroom. She looked around, and apart from the furniture, the place was empty.
“What are you searching for?” She whispered.
“Something…anything. I’ll know when I see it,” Sémya muttered back. “Hide here,” she said when they heard footsteps. She left the door slightly opened so they could see. Johanna was at the edge of the corridor with the gorgeous man they saw at the beginning of the party.
“She’s cheating on Julian?”
“Hush Polli, I want to hear what they’re saying,” she told her.
“Because you have dog hearing?” Polliannah said. The man smoothly passed his hand around Johanna’s waist but she removed it. “Okay maybe he’s just a grabby guest?”
“No, he’s completely invading her personal space. She’s just being careful,” Sémya said. “Peter! Not here, not now.” Johanna said before moving away.
Peter stayed behind and looked their way. They both held our breath until he walked away. “And now I found it,” she smiled. They quickly sneaked back to the party.
“So are you going to tell Julian?” Polliannah asked her.
“Tell him what? That she was talking to some bloke?” She said as she put her shoes back on. “This is Eileen Clarke,” Sémya told Polliannah when the bubbly blond woman joined them. “You’re late but you look lovely tonight.”
“Nice to finally put a face to the name, Polliannah I presume.” Eileen blushed and turned her attention the younger woman who was next to her. “And this is Emma Blum, Johanna’s assistant. She organized this entire shindig for Miss Cartier. I just got here but everything looks great!”
Emma looked a little shaken. “Are you alright Emma?” Sémya said.
She looked away for a bit but smiled. “I’m fine. Who’s up for a tour?"
Polliannah looked at Sémya, they just had their own private tour. Eileen looked very excited about the idea. They all nodded back. “Shall we?” Emma said.

THE EXCERPT:
I took a step forward. “Whoa!” One more step and I would’ve slipped off the mountain.
The mountain?
All of a sudden, I found myself standing on Theodore Roosevelt’s head at Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota.
Gammy? People just don’t transport to different places. I mean, unless you have access to the Starship Enterprise and didn’t tell me.”
Isn’t the sun shining bright?” Gammy asked. “And the sky … It’s a flawless, beautiful blue.”
Hundreds of colorful butterflies came toward me then, flying around my head. “Shoo,” I said, waving for them to go away.”
Aren’t they pretty,” Gammy said. She stood over on Abraham Lincoln’s head, pitching rocks at the trees below.
I guess. How—how did I get here?”
She didn’t answer.
I glanced around, feeling her awkward silence. “Why are there so many butterflies?”
Butterflies,” she said. “Funny how butterflies come out of old, ugly cocoons, huh?”
I gave her a strange look, trying to absorb everything around me. “Uh, yeah, um … cocoons sometimes remind me of coffins—’cause I used to think the caterpillars were dead inside of them when I was little.”
Gammy chuckled. “And then they emerge into something more beautiful, more powerful than they were before. Like how you let them boys dare you into raising that dead soldier.”
That didn’t make me more beautiful. It scarred me for life.”
Did it?”
Yeah, I raised some lunatic jarhead that went on a rampage and killed the cadets with me. I’d be in jail right now if Reaper hadn’t made the case disappear, somehow. Trust me, I was scarred for life, Gammy.”
On the contrary, dear. The moment you beheaded that deadhead, as you call him, you grew.”
Grew?”
Yes, child. You came into who you were supposed to be. That deadhead saved your life, your death, and your rebirth. You are just like these butterflies, shedding one life for another.”
I watched the colorful butterflies float around us and said nothing.
She picked up a rock and threw it at a tree. “Like I always say, sweetie, everything ain’t always what it seems, you know. Woot-hoo, did you see that? I hit that tree dead on.”
I looked down at my hands and my feet, seeing pink converses, blue jeans, my lean waist, and a long-sleeved, midriff black tee that read GOT ZOMBIES? in lower-cased white letters. Yay.
I’m back,” I said. “Okay, I’m game. What gives?”
I glanced at my chipped, blue fingernails and bit off an irritating hanging piece. I lifted my head back up, and Gammy stood next to me.
We’re at Mt Rushmore,” she said. “This is the life after life. Come and give me a hug girl, before my arms fall off from poor circulation.”
Oh, uh,” I said, picking myself up with a grunt from the hard, rocky surface. “We’re … dead?”

Will past circumstances prevent Emmalynne from having the future she deserves? Or can Grady help her follow her heart and show her that she is Not Alone

THE REVIEW

Wow... I loved it!  Completely loved it!!  I could completely relate to Emmalynne!  Right down to the HUGE purse she carries around!  Every insecurity she has about herself, and when she first meets Grady Finnegan, those insecurities come to the surface.  He's beautiful, and is totally taken with Emmy when he first lays eyes on her.

Emmy is a broken woman.. literally.  After spending years in a marriage where her husband treated her horribly, she's widowed in a tragic car accident.  Because of the verbal abuse her husband gave her, she believed all of the bad stuff he called her.  When he passes away, she feels more relief that she doesn't have to endure anymore of the abuse.  She's sad that her son Tucker lost his father, but he wasn't a positive role model for him.

Now, she's focusing on him, and her book store Turn The Page. Her world goes completely upside down when she meets Grady while filling in as a drummer for her brother in law's band.  She hasn't shown any interest in the male species since her husband died.  For good reason.  She's scared about getting into another relationship, and letting someone in.  Her trust, when given, is extremely precious.

With Grady, he makes her  feel safe and wanted.  Most importantly, he makes her feel loved and desirable. The only problem is, she senses he's keeping something from her.  In fact, she's sure of it.  He keeps sending certain calls to voicemail, and doesn't tell her who the calls are from.

Grady wants nothing more then to forget his past.  Things come to a head when Emmy catches him in a comprising position.  He's devastated when she won't give him a chance to explain, and tries everything to get her to listen to him.  When she's brutally attacked outside of her store, he rushes to her side.  He knows who did it, and he wants to kill him.  Being former Special Forces, he's able, but he knows he can't.  He decides to give her time to heal from her wounds and come to her when the timing is right.

I thought this story was beautiful in so many ways... as I said, I really related to Emmalynne Morgan.  I've been in her place, wondering what the gorgeous guy sees in me with all my flaws (my HB).  The whole purse thing had me laughing, because I have one... for the same reason she did.  You never know when you're going to need something!  I am also looking for a my phone for about five minutes after I've missed a call, but that's besides the point!  I loved the strength that she never knew she had until she really needed to get through some horrible situations.  Her son, Tucker, I adored!  Again, he reminded me of my own nine year old boy.  Too cool for motherly affection in front of his friends!

Grady.... oh Grady.... I really liked him.  He was determined to get Emmalynne.  He knew she was insecure about her weight and her bad leg, but everything she hated, he loved.  He loved her curves, and when he got to know, loved her.  After not being there when she was attacked, he made a promise to himself he would be there if it happened again.

Emmalynne turned around, fiddling with the bottom edge of her shirt. She looked up at me with her bottom lip tucked between her teeth, her eyes wary. She was nervous again, but seeing her nibble on her lip made me want to take her, here and now. “Thank you for bringing me home, Grady. And for coming to my rescue, I appreciate it.” “Don’t worry about it. I’ll see you tomorrow, yeah?” I had to get out of there and fast. “Oh yeah, right, for our date.” She stepped towards me and closed her eyes, her tongue darting out to lick her lips then puckering them. She wanted to kiss me. That made my pants grow even tighter and I wanted nothing more than to explore every inch of that amazing mouth. Those lips were all pouty and sexy, but she wasn’t totally coherent. And as much as I wanted to, and Lord did I want to, I wasn’t going to take advantage of her like that. So I leaned into her and kissed her forehead, the smell of her shampoo hitting me like a brick, Vanilla and Mint. I exhaled as I took a step back and, she immediately opened her eyes, her expression pained.

I am a wife, mother of two beautiful girlies, an avid reader, and a new Romance and New Adult author. I was born and raised in Southern Indiana, but resided in Texas for five years while my husband was in the US Army. It was definitely a journey, but I am so glad to be back in my home state. Whenever I'm not doing my motherly duties or at the soccer field I absolutely love to read whenever I have a moment to spare. My kindle is never far from my side. My love of reading increased about a year ago and due to my love of books I decided to try my hand at writing. Already having a set of characters screaming to get out, my story took over and came to life.
