Blurb: Hello. My name is Paul DeLisle. I’m the guy who wrote this book. You've probably never heard of me. That's okay. Most people wouldn't know me from Adam. But, unless you've been living in a cloistered monastery for the last fifteen years, you have heard of my band. So begins the memoir of the creation, rise, and current state of the multi-platinum recording artist Smash Mouth as told by bassist Paul DeLisle. Well known for their hits “All Star,” “Walking on the Sun,” “Then the Morning Comes,” “Can’t Get Enough of You Baby,” and “I’m a Believer,” the band carried the spirit of a generation, but didn't stop there. Enjoy this behind-the-scenes look from Paul’s unique, there from the start, insider’s view.

Hello, my name is Paul DeLisle. I’m the guy who wrote this book. You've probably never heard of me, and that's okay. Most people wouldn't know me from Adam. But, unless you've been living in a cloistered monastery for the last fifteen years, you have heard of my band.
There's an episode of Cheers where washed-up ball player Sam Malone, frustrated with either Diane or Rebecca, proclaims, "Y'know, most people don't know this ... but I’m famous!"
I love that line. I can totally relate. You see, I am a founding and continued member of the band Smash Mouth. Yet I am, proudly and alas, the bass player. I’m not famous. My band is.
From the beginning, Smash Mouth was set up as a democracy between four musicians and a manager, each player having an equal voice on band matters. Yet we were all fully aware and accepting of the fact that, as lead singer/frontman, Steve Harwell would be getting a disproportionate amount of attention. Seeing as he is the face and mouthpiece of Smash Mouth, you may be a little disappointed he didn't write this book.
But stay with me here. Because as you'll see, I have a unique vantage point: as one of only four original constituents, I’ve been involved in every aspect of the band since day one. Only Steve and I have trod every step of this Smash Mouth journey. Also, while traditionally under-recognized, the bass player himself sees everything. Plus I went to college. Who better to write a book about Smash Mouth?
That said, keep in mind this book is solely from my point of view. Steve, Greg, Kevin, and Robert would obviously have different takes on certain events. However, this book is simply intended as a comprehensive account of our rise to fame and continued success.

The child laughed and nodded, making her blonde curls bob. Hatred burned bright and hot in Metis’ chest as she watched the interaction. While she had been imprisoned, the Mercesti elder had been living a life of pleasure with his avowed…the Kynzesti female named Tate. They and their companions had robbed Metis of thirteen years of her existence.

They didn’t deserve the family they had made. They didn’t deserve happiness.

She was determined to take it from them.

Zachariah’s gaze suddenly shifted to the tree where she stood. Metis darted out of sight and stood absolutely still. She had to force herself not to flee and reveal herself. Fear had her heart thudding in her chest.

Her own reaction infuriated her. He would not hold that kind of sway over her, she silently vowed.

Soon enough, he would be the one who was terrified.

“Daddy, that’s not fair!”

Metis dared another glance and watched the boy, Ryder, rush back and tug on his father’s tank top. She was relieved when Zachariah’s attention turned from her position.

“Eden should be with Mommy,” the boy said, glaring at his sister. “She’s inta-ruptin’ you too!”

“Enough, Ryder.” Zachariah lowered Eden to the ground, brushing his hand absently over her hair in a way that confirmed to Metis that he held affection for her. “Take your sister with you. Uncle Tiege will keep an eye on you both until I finally finish this bloody conversation.”

Ryder’s eyes widened. “You’re not s’posed to say bloody, Daddy. I’m tellin’ Mommy.”

Metis didn’t hear Zachariah’s response. She was too focused on the smaller female, who had apparently lost interest in the conversation. The child bent down and picked up the wooden sword that was nearly the same size as she was, gave it a curious look, then tossed it back to the ground. As Derian wisely bent
to pick up the sword to keep it out of reach, the girl skipped away.

Right to Metis.

In an instant, Metis’ plans changed. She realized that she didn’t have to kill the Mercesti elder to get her revenge. During her imprisonment, she had learned about the sentiment Estilorians harbored for each other. She had learned how to use that kind of useless emotion to manipulate her captors and escape.

She knew she could take something from Zachariah. Something that would hurt just as much as peeling his flesh or ripping out his heart.

Maybe even more.

Just as Derian started after the child, Metis stepped out from behind the tree. She was watching the little girl, but registered that the Mercesti commander hesitated. The child’s gaze lifted to Metis as she stopped in front of her. She started to smile as Metis reached for her, but then her expression froze. Realizing the child sensed danger, Metis acted quickly, grabbing her before she could run.

“Eden!”

Zachariah’s desperate cry had all activity in the area ceasing. Metis met his gaze an instant before she teleported with the screaming child in her grasp, and she knew she had been right. It was the Mercesti elder who was now terrified.

He knew he would never see his little girl again.

Tucker

I am sitting at the local bar contemplating on what I have done with my life. I am almost twenty eight years old and I feel like I haven’t done anything worthwhile. I always hated school. I made sure to get a high school diploma but college wasn’t in the cards for me. I went to a technical school and became a roofer a year later. I have been working at Southern Roofing for eight years now. I have made good money but I feel like my life is empty. My brother, Jake, and I don’t get along and it got worse after my parents passed away and he went off to college. My best friend, Shane, left home and went to Louisiana State University. He comes home to visit but it isn’t the same. Our little circle of friends seemed to have disappeared when everyone went to college and I stayed behind in the town we all grew up in. We all went our separate ways except for Jake and Belle. They both attended New York University and were both studying radiology. Don’t get me wrong. I am proud of all my friends and I want to see them succeed. Unfortunately, I can’t help but feel left behind. I don’t have a girlfriend and I have always dreamed of having a family of my own. The one girl I have always wanted is way out of my league and my best friend’s sister. Shane would kill me if I went after Kayla, I think. Honestly, I’m pretty sure Kayla would laugh in my face if I ever asked her out. Kayla is absolutely gorgeous. She has long light brown hair and the most amazing green eyes. She has an hourglass figure that will drop a man to his knees. Besides her killer looks, the enormous brain on that woman is so hot. I would give anything to have more than a friendship with her but I am afraid of rejection and that our friendship will go to hell. I am also pretty sure she has never looked at me that way anyway.

All it takes is just one moment to change the course of your life. For me, it was one perfect night. I have always had a thing for my brother’s best friend, Ben. When I found him on my parents’ couch, drowning his sorrows in a whiskey bottle, my attempts to comfort him quickly turned into a night of raw and intense passion. My foolish heart hoped he might feel the same way I do. But Ben wasn’t there to stay and I woke up the next morning alone with a broken heart. I attempted to forget the guy with a smile to die for and a touch that sets me on fire. I thought I was over him. I thought he was gone forever. Until, eighteen months later Ben returns and learns my secret. Now, he is hell-bent on winning me back. He plays dirty. And he won’t stop until he gets what he wants—me. But he has secrets of his own.

Secrets that could destroy everything we might have and everything we are.

excerpt

We more or less jog back to the house, talking a lot of non-sense and laughing. I blame it on the cold or the sudden influx of fresh air to our brains. When the house comes into sight, he nudges my shoulder.

“Whoever gets to the house first, gets a wish?”

“What, do I look like a genie?”

“No, but I can rub you places if you want.” He smirks at me. I bump into him, making him step off the paved road and fight for balance, before I sprint ahead like a bat out of hell and yell behind me.

“Dream on. I’ll so win. And then you’ll be my bitch.” I’m running so fast I can actually feel my lungs burn. I suppose running after a toddler isn’t exactly the same as working out. And yoga doesn’t seem to have done much for my stamina. I feel like I’m going to collapse, but I’m not willing to give up. I have about hundred feet left to run when I can hear his footsteps behind me. When he passes me, he doesn’t seem to be out of breath at all.

“Who’s going to be whose bitch, huh? Is that all you got Gilbert?” Such a cocky fucker. He overtakes me and gets to the house before me, casually leaning against the porch while I trot over there feeling like death warmed over. It’s not fair. He looks absolutely breathtaking, the way he has his arms crossed over his chest, his feet are crossed at his ankles while his body is leaning against the bars of the porch railing. His head is tilted slightly back, nearly reaching the handrail. He has a shit-eating grin on his face. I give him a death glare and am about to walk past him up the stairs onto the porch, when he grabs my arm and yanks me toward him. He turns me so my back is now against the porch and cages me in with each hand grabbing one of the bars on either side of my head. Suddenly, breathing becomes even more difficult.

“What about my wish? You won’t go back on your word, will you, Frankie?” I can only shake my head. You know, like intelligent people do. Forming coherent words and phrases...pfft, so over it.

“Good,” is all he says before he lowers his head, coming closer and closer. I feel like I’m going to faint. I know I should stop this. I know it isn’t the best idea. I know it could break my heart, again. Chances are it will. And if it breaks this time, if he breaks it this time, there won’t be a coming back from it. Knowing all of this, I still can’t manage to tell my heart to stop doing the little somersaults and I can’t tell those damn butterflies in my stomach to chill the fuck out.

Instead, I lick my lips in anticipation. When his lips eventually connect to mine, I feel like my lungs are finally able to fill with air. It feels as if I’ve been holding my breath forever—not just the last minute, but the past eighteen months. His lips are soft, yet demanding against mine and his tongue is insisting on getting access. I part my lips slowly, not expecting my body betraying me. When his tongue connects with mine, a quiet whimper sneaks past my lips—but not quiet enough. Ben hears it and it seems to spur him on. He presses his body closer to mine, his tongue engaging mine in a dirty little tango. We’re lost in the moment, in the sensation of tasting each other. When the front door opens, we both startle and quickly step away from each other—like two teenagers nearly caught by their parents. He seems to be able to get his bearings quicker than I do, sidestepping me and walking up the stairs.

THE REVIEW

When I first started reading this book, I felt really sorry for Frankie.  After one night with her brother's best friend, she gets pregnant, and when she needs the support from her parents, they turn on her.

To make things worse, they are constantly reminding her about what happened eighteen months before...

When she agrees to come home for Thanksgiving, imagine her shock when she sees the one man she didn't think she would ever see again.  Ben.  Her brother's best friend. The father of her child.

It doesn't take Ben long to figure who the father of Archer is, and is determined to be a good father and get Frankie back.  He knows he screwed up be leaving her after their night together, and the problem is, Frankie is fighting him at every turn.  She loves him, but is terrified that he won't just leave her this time, but leave their son.

I really loved reading this, because I loved the story!  My favorite character was Frankie's brother Dave, who had her back through everything.  Even when her parents treated her like horribly, he was there with her, supporting her.

Ben... I fell in love with Ben... Yes, he left her, but he knows he has to prove himself to Frankie.  Not only to be a father of Archer, but also to be with her again.  He has secrets that he can't tell her; but he is absolutely bound and determined to win her love back.

Meet the Author

Josie Wright has always been a bookworm, spending every free moment with her nose buried in a book. While others were out partying, she spent her evenings with Heathcliff, Sydney Carton or Snape. Romance, fantasy, thrillers - you name it, she read it.

Thanks to the Kindle, she finally arrived in the 21St century and discovered the Indie literature world. Josie has been lost to it ever since. With her love for the written word and her promiscuous feelings for countless book boyfriends, the next logical step was to start writing. The voices in her head and her imaginary friends wanted out to play and so she wrote her debut novel "That One Night", that's to be released early summer 2015. And the good news is, there are more voices and imaginary friend where Ben and Frankie came from.

Josie is a financial expert by day and a writing junkie by night. The rest of the time she's a bit of a hippie, a bit of a goth and many things in between. Josie loves to spend time with her husband when she can tear herself away from her book boyfriends. She loves video games, movies, good food and even better music. She's addicted to chips, long baths and shoes. Oh, and books of course. Definitely books.
