TOUR-BOOKSYNOPSIS
Book Blurb/Synopsis – Cinderella meets Swan Lake in a cross-class, Victorian novel about a ballerina, an aristocrat, and the space in between them.
Lisette yearns for freedom, security and love, but none are offered on the run-down stage of The Imperial Theatre. Instead she has hard work, a tyrannical aunt, and the hope of one day becoming a prima ballerina. Dancing on the stage she catches the attention of two powerful men: Lord Gainswith and Lord De Vale.
Lord Evander Gainswith never expected to fall in love, let alone with a woman so wholly unacceptable to his family and his peers. The sinister Lord De Vale covets Lisette's youth and strength, and is willing to pay well for it. Lisette may dance roles in fairy tales and fantasies, but the real world is about to intrude, bringing with it the harsh realities of life for a young girl with dreams of rising above the demimonde.

MY REVIEW

I've always loved historical romances!!  This one was no different!  Also, it helped that it was set in my favorite time period!!  Nineteenth Century London!!!  Makes me sigh just thinking about it...

The only time Lisette feels free is when she's on stage dancing.  Her aunt Marie Devore is hellbent on making her a prima ballerina, and will stop at nothing to get her there.  She has plans for Lisette, and none of them are good.  The one thing Lisette has longed for is someone who will love her.  She's never felt love from her aunt, but she's grown to know the people at The Imperial Theatre as her only family, since her mother's death.

When she sees Evander Gainswith at a restaurant, she's infatuated.  She knows it's impossible to start anything with this man, because her aunt would forbid it.  Evander is smitten, and once he finds out she's a ballerina, he sets out to make it known he wants to get to know her.

Against her reservations, Lisette allows Evander to woo her.  What she doesn't know is there is someone else who wants her attentions as well, and it isn't good.  She finds out some troubling revalations about her aunt as well, which make her realize she really needs to get away from her.  Her aunt is a horrible woman, who believes Lisette being the prima ballerina will be her meal ticket.  Too bad that isn't what Lisette wants.

She wants Evander, and when he tells her what he wants of their future, is isn't what Lisette expects.  She's heartbroken, and decides that she needs to stay true to herself.

I really loved this book, and I loved getting lost in it!  I loved Lisette, who you believe is a push-over at first because of her aunt, but her strength comes out.  When the time comes she's ready to fight for what she wants.

Her aunt.... what a horrible woman!  She's bitter and angry, and only thinks of Lisette as a way to get a better life.  The things she has done in her life are despicable, and the farther away Lisette can get from her, the better.

Evander, although he does screw things up with Lisette, he makes it his mission to make up to her.  He loves her, and wants no one but her.  He will stop at nothing to protect her.

London, 1884
Lisette was weightless as she leapt into a grand jeté across the stage. She was free and in that moment her heart soared past the walls of the Imperial Theatre. She landed lightly and began the fouetté en tournant, whipping her leg from fourth position to behind her knee; she created impetus to spin on pointe. After the eight revolutions, she planted her feet and lifted her hand in the air, stopping in front of her aunt. There was a slight wobble in her legs and she tried not to wince. Fixing a smile on her face, she prayed that her aunt had not noticed. Lisette had wanted perfection but had fallen short.
A trickle of sweat slid its way down the middle of her back. Her heart beat rapidly and she tried to catch her breath as her aunt stepped forward.
Marie Devoré regarded her niece for a second. Her eyes bore into Lisette’s before she raised her hand and slapped her across the face.
Lisette’s head jerked to the side as the burning sting radiated over her cheek.
‘What was that? A farce...? A comedy, perhaps?’
‘No, Aunt Marie, I am sorry that I wobbled,’ she said as she looked at the well‐worn wooden floor and resisted the urge to cradle her cheek.
‘When you finish, the movement must be sleek, clean and set in stone, without any trace of a tremble.’
‘Yes, Aunt.’
‘Go, out of my sight. Prepare the costumes for tonight’s performance,’ Marie said with a wave of her thin hand. ‘You will practice again tomorrow. Without the wobble.’
Lisette bowed her head before running off into the wings of the stage. She ran as fast as she could past the burgundy velvet curtains, beneath the scenery fly and the rigging, down the narrow flight of stairs that ran beneath the stage, until she was in the cool and narrow corridor, which led deeper into the bowels of the theatre. Her cheek burned but it was the sting of failure that hurt all the more.

REVIEW FOR BORDERLAND BRIDE

I love reading Historical Romances!!!  It always makes me want to live back in that time!!

When Jake first comes upon Isabel, he thinks she getting robbed by villagers.  In truth, she's getting beaten.  When he sees her beaten face, his heart goes out to her, and he takes her to his brother's castle to heal.  He's determined to find the ones responsible.

Isabel can't talk and can't hear because of her injuries, but she feels safe with Jake.  He saved her from a most uncertain reality, and for that she is greatful.  What he doesn't know is she is running from a man who is supposed to love her. Her father.

She wants to stay with Jake, but knows she can't.  Her father is set out those she has learned to care about, and Isabel knows she has no choice but to go back to him.  The last thing Jake wants if for her to be harmed again, and despite his reservations, devises a plan to keep her safe.  It's not a plan he's very happy with, but if it keeps her safe, that's all that matters.

I loved this book, and I felt sad for Isabel when Jake found her.  Even more so when she couldn't talk or hear anyone.  Isabel proved her strength though... able to recover from injuries everyone thought she couldn't come back from.

Jake, I fell in love with!  He's a big guy, and he loves Isabel.  Because of his first wife, he has some misgivings about falling in love again, and makes some wrong assumptions about Isabel herself.  Little does he know, she manages to prove him wrong!!

REVIEW FOR BORDERLAND BEAUTY

This is Dominic's story.  You meet him in the first book about Jake and Isabel, but now... it's his turn.

When he finds out that his father signed a marriage contract when he was a boy to a woman he's never met, Dominic is leary about meeting the woman.  What he doesn't know is that he met her when he first became a Lord at seventeen.  Because of his actions back then, the woman in question, has severe misgivings about Dominic the man.

When he meets Lucy Montgomery, he knows he's met the woman for him.  He also knows she doesn't want to be there with him.  She has certain assumptions about his character that aren't true, but believes them anyway.  Despite him telling her otherwise.  She's hellbent on not falling in love with him, but she isn't expecting the determination of Dominic.  She doesn't want to marry, least of all, one who would only want her for a fling.  Lucy won't be cast aside by her husband.

What Dominic doesn't expect is her low opinion of herself.  She's beautiful, but she hates everything about herself.  He sets out to make her change her opinion, but it's an uphill battle the whole way.  When his village is attacked, Lucy's opinion of him starts to change.  She sees him for the man he has become, and sees how strong and determined he is to save his people.

When Lucy is faced with the loss of Dominic, she's beside herself.  She's finally opened her heart to him and now there is a risk he may die at the hands of some very bad men.  She makes a decision that may cost her her life, but then Dominic will go free.  He doesn't realize just much she loves him until that moment... or how sneaky she can be.

I loved both of these books!!  Yes, Dominic had his faults, but he was a good man inside.  One who was confident, but with Lucy that confidence didn't last.  She was the one woman who didn't fall at his feet, and he loved her for it.

BORDERLAND BRIDE EXCERPT
“Isabel, what in God’s name are you doing?”
“I am returning to my father,” she told him breathlessly.
“You would see yourself in that monster’s hands? Why?”
“I cannot see Thornewall suffer for my sakes. And I cannot see you or Dominic harmed. Not for me.”
“We are grown men; will you not let us make these decisions ourselves? Thornewall is strong, we have endured worse.”
Isabel shook her head. “Nay, I will not see war brought to your door. If my father fails here, then he will turn his attention to your lands. They have not the strength of Thornewall, you have said as much yourself.”
Jake squeezed her arm until he saw her wince. Damn his brutish manners. He could not let her throw herself into the arms of a murderer for their sakes. “I can defend my lands, lass. I’ve done it before and I’ll gladly do it again.”
But she was right, Greycroft was ill prepared for a full-scale war and his own castle would not hold out long against a siege. It was likely he would die defending it.
“That is what I fear,” she said softly and Jake wondered if he had spoken aloud.
Her voice took on a desperate quality and she pulled against his grip. “Let me go, Jake, for I cannot allow you to place yourself in danger for me. Not for a woman that hurt you so.”
He considered her and saw the fear in her eyes - a fear that was not for herself, but for him, his brother, and all their people. How he could ever have thought her as wicked as his wife, he knew not. There was nothing in this lass but kindness. He gulped, fighting the words he would have to say. There was no other way.
“Isabel, you do not have to return.”
“I do, Jake!” She struggled again.
“Listen…” He grabbed at her other arm and pinned her still. “Listen, there is another way. Marry…”
She ceased her struggles and stared at him.
“Marry Dominic.”
Isabel blinked at him. “What?” she whispered.
“Marry Dominic. Your father would be a fool to say nay to such an allegiance. He is one of the richest men in England. There will be no war and you will be safe.”
Safe. He clung to the word, trying to ignore the ache in his heart. It didn’t matter, as long as she was safe. In spite of himself, he urged her to say nay, to confess her love for him, but he knew it could come to nothing. He had nothing to offer Lord Henry in return for her hand.
Isabel gaped at him. “Marry Dominic? But…did he decide this?”
“Nay.” He sighed. “‘Twas my idea.”
She gulped and her eyes misted with tears as she took a deep breath. Her composure regained, she shook her head in disbelief. “Why would you suggest such an idea?”

BORDERLAND BEAUTY EXCERPT
Holding out his hand, his dipped his head and eyed her from under his brow. “Will you dance with me, Lucy?”
She hesitated, glancing around as the couples took their positions. “I know not this dance.” In truth, she knew few dances, having avoided them for most of her life.
“I will teach you.”
Dominic snatched her hand and led her to the centre of the floor. Her heart slammed into her chest at the touch of his fingers. Why did his touch always incite such a reaction? Glancing around, she realised she could hardly tear herself away from him. Many were watching them. Especially the women.
“Stand there,” he ordered as he stepped back.
Her eyes darted from Dominic to the other dancers who moved confidently around them. He motioned for her to step forward and she did so, bringing herself closer to him. The dancers circled one another and Lucy mimicked them. His sapphire eyes remained on her, bright and alert and her skin tingled under his scrutiny. Why watch her so closely?
“Now step back,” he murmured.
She did as he bid, stepping back a little later than the other dancers. Her cheeks filled with heat but she could not tell it if was because of his examination of her or her lack of dancing ability. His eyes continued to follow her avidly and she dropped her gaze. Nay, it was Dominic who was the cause of her blush.
The dancers lined up and Lucy stumbled back, her eyes narrowing as Dominic’s crinkled in amusement. A lord and lady wove between them, working their way up the line. The lady’s hand brushed across Dominic’s chest as she passed, a flirtatious smile on her lips, and Lucy clenched her teeth together. He flicked a disinterested look at the woman before securing his gaze back onto hers.
Lucy and Dominic did the same, weaving through the other dancers until they reached the end of the line. Keeping her spine stiff, she resisted the urge to peek at him as she did so, but as they faced each other one more, his blue eyes caught hers and she could do little else but stare back.
Lord, she was getting lost in those penetrating eyes.
Stepping forward hastily, her eyes widened as his hands came about her waist. He lifted her easily and her heart came into her throat. The ladies around her squealed in delight as they too were lifted and then placed down, but surprise had struck her dumb.
“Move back,” he commanded quietly, his eyes darkening.
She faltered as she retreated, her pulse beating erratically. His look of desire confused her and she pulled her chin up. She would not be toyed with like this. It was time to wrest back some control.
They repeated the first movements and Lucy stepped confidently now. “I hear tell that you are searching for a wife,” she stated archly.
Dominic barely blinked. “Aye, ‘tis true. Why? Are you interested?”
“Hardly.” She released an unsteady laugh. “I thought you were to be married to Lady Isabel of…of Greycroft.”
“I was.” He circled her, appraising her openly as he did so.
She followed him with her gaze, hoping he could not see through her bold look. “But it seems she married your brother.”
“That she did.”
“Are you not angry? Did she not wound your ego?”
He shook his head with a shrug. “Nay. Jake loves his wife very much, why would I begrudge him that?”
“You did not love her?”
“I love Isabel as a sister. She is a fine woman but she is better suited to my brother. I do not regret that she is not my wife.”
“She probably does not regret it either,” she said with the raise of an eyebrow.
They wove their way in and out of the line and they waited as the other dancers took their place.
“Isabel did not suit me, but a woman like you…you would suit me very much.”
“Ha, you think me foolish enough to fall for such talk? I have heard much of your reputation, Dominic of Thornewall. You would promise marriage just for the chance of a tumble. I would not give up my virtue to such a man.”
His hands came upon her waist. “That sounds like a challenge,” he said before lifting her effortlessly.
He placed her down and Lucy gaped at him, speechless. The people around them clapped as the music ceased but Lucy paid little attention. Raw desire glinted in his expression and her stomach twisted. Surely that look was not for her? He was teasing her, playing with her, luring her in so he could strike her down.
She curled her fists and clamped her mouth shut as she swivelled on her heel. She would not let him make a fool of her again.
