Review of Ashes and Ice by Rochelle Maya Callen

She is desperate to remember.
He is aching to forget.
Together, they are not broken.
But together, one may not survive.

Jade wakes up with no memory of her past and blood on her hands.

Plagued by wicked thoughts, she searches for answers. Instead, she finds a boy who doesn't offer her answers, but hope. But sometimes, when nightmares turn into reality and death follows you everywhere, hope is not enough.

LUST. LOVE. LOSS. Sometimes, all that is left are Ashes and Ice.

This book had me from the first word!!  I was hooked right from the beginning, and could not wait to see what happened.

Jade has no memory of who she is or where she's from.  She has glimpses of certain memories, but nothing she can hold on to for very long.  When she wakes up with blood on her hands, literally, she knows something is wrong with her.

She finds herself in Louisiana, and realizes there are clues there on who or what she is.

Conner is hurting, and he's hurting badly.  He's suffering from the loss of his father, and because of this wants to be invisible at school.  If no one notices him, they can't pick on him.  He likes it that way.  When he meets Jade for the first time, his world changes.

When Jade starts having strange visions of girls who have been murdered, she starts on a journey for answers about who she is.  When she finally finds the answers, she's forced to make a choice between life and death; good and evil.

Throughout the book, I kept trying to guess what Jade was, because it was clear she wasn't human.  First I thought she was a vampire, and once you read the book, you'll know why I thought that.  It is so far from what she actually is, that I'm still shaking my head at myself.  There is something dark within her, and it is fighting to come out.  She just doesn't know what that something is.

I felt sorry for Conner, because I know I would have been friends with him in highschool.  He's picked on and bullied by two jocks at school who he despises wholeheartedly.  Jade is the light in his dark cloud that is following him.

I'm going to repeat myself here, but I loved this book so much!  I love a book that keeps me guessing, and this book kept me guessing right until the end! I know it is one that I will be reading again, because I love Jade and Conner together!!  There are times I just want to give Conner a hug, because I felt horrible for him at times.  He proves to Jade just how much he loves her, and it almost costs him his life.

Excerpt

There’s always that one guy. Riley watched her date and shook her head.

"Stay there, I'll get the door." Mike got out of the car.

The cellophane on the roses Mike gave her when he arrived at her apartment crinkled in complaint as she moved them to the back seat, but not before she breathed in one more time. The floral perfume combined with his cologne made her dizzy, or maybe it was the ride down Pacific Coat Highway to Malibu.

Yes, there was always that one guy, the one that every other man is measured against. Up until yesterday she hadn’t thought about Mike in years, but he was always there. His imprint was all over her, a fingerprint unique to only her. How many men had to live up to memories they couldn’t compete with?

Part of her wished she possessed the strength to turn him down. Part of her wished he hadn't shown, or cancelled. Part of her wanted this date to reclaim what she lost so long ago she forgot she missed it.

The moment she got in the car with him, she became the seventeen-year-old
Margaret again. Only her former self never got this far. At the time she convinced herself it was better, the date would have been terrible, he was too goal oriented, and he only wanted what he perceived as an easy lay.

He took long strides around the car, opened the door on her side and held out his hand.
"Riley."

Now she was Riley. Margaret was gone. Riley had hidden her away with a name change taken from her parents' middle names, a bottle of hair dye, and a move to a new state.

She paused, studying him. Tonight he wore a pair of black pants and matching blazer and dark blue button down. As always, he fit his situation perfectly. She acquiesced and put her hand in his.

Blurb-

Touch me, and bring me to life...

How do you move on when you don’t even know where you were going in the first place?

The Spirit Stalker is dead and I have finally started to erect my life. But I quickly discover, that just because the structure is built doesn’t mean the foundation is sturdy. As much as I try to manage my abilities, I can’t completely control them. The physical impossibility of the relationship I have with Justice has reached a boiling point; our fundamental problem is my inability to control myself from absorbing his power, and his fears of touching me because of it.

As if that wasn’t deal-breaker enough, a new threat looms on my horizon - Darklings.
They are grim reapers of the immortal world who surface every five-hundred-years to feed off the souls of magical beings who are weak, aimless, lost; those who have given up and want to move on.

They also hunt power. Which means, they’re hunting me.

Abandoned by the one person I need the most, I find myself in Melenia’s realm.  There, I’m courted by Siberian, a dangerous pixie who covets me, hunted by Death personified; all the while hiding my powers and my ancient bloodline. The pixie prince is alluring, and I feel so broken and vulnerable. I know giving in to him means giving myself over to him. But right now, I don’t care. All I want is to feel anything other than the loss and rejection Justice left me with.
Anything other than pain.

So what do I do when I’m scared to be touched, even though I know it’s the only way to bring my soul back to life?

Excerpt- Justice’s POV

We land right outside the gates of Keelin Castle. Extinguishing ourselves, we descend on the palace.
Walking authoritatively, we make our way down the nave-like hallway of the castle to the huge, golden double doors at the end. The throne room.
“Are you sure that’s where she’ll be?” Derrin asks snidely. “She might be waiting in her chambers for you.”
“Well if she is, she’ll be waiting a while.”
“It could be a good way to get some of your frustrations out,” he says boorishly.
“There’s more than one way to release frustration,” I threaten him.
“Bring it, bitch,” he grabs his crotch, not intimidated at all.
Asshole.
I push open the throne room doors, and as expected, we see the pixie queen perched on her throne waiting for us.
Emery surveys us as we approach. Both Derrin and I give a small nod in due respect as we reach her, but don’t be deceived, we are the supreme strata.
“Your little human has caused quite a stir,” she says evenly, but I can see the danger flashing in her eyes.
“She was the one who was attacked,” I quickly defend Liv.
“Was she? Or did she bring it on herself?”
My look becomes more intense. “What are you talking about?”
“My brother has taken quite a liking to her you know,” Emery says randomly.
Yes, I’ve noticed.
“If your brother knows what’s best for him, he will disappear from her life,” I say through clenched teeth.
Or I’ll remove him myself.
Emery’s eyes become razor sharp at my comment - she’s realized something. She slips off her throne and stalks down the three slate stairs to the floor where Derrin and I are standing. Like Liv, she is tiny, with long hair blacker than night and almond eyes just like Melenia’s.
“What is so special about this human?” she looks up at me, searing the question straight into my soul.
“Nothing,” I snap, but Emery knows me. She sees right through my lies.
“Then it will be nothing if I send the royal guard to take care of her, and rid my land of such contaminants.”
“Do it, and I will burn this entire realm to the ground,” I growl.
Her eyes grow a little wider, but she doesn’t back down from my glare.
“You love her.”
“No.”
“You deny it?”
“Yes.”
No.
“You loved me once,” she says vulnerably.
“What we had was never love,” I bite, “just sex.”
Ouch. That was harsh, even for me.
Emery’s eyebrows crease, and I know I have hurt her deeply.
It’s not a lie, I never loved her. We did have an intense physical relationship that included some emotion, but it’s incomparable to what I have with Liv.
She backs away from me, shifting her eyes between me and Derrin.
Derrin clears his throat. “Not to interrupt this lover’s quarrel,” that I highly enjoy watching, he tells me telepathically, “but what exactly did you mean when you said she brought it on herself?”
Emery’s full attention falls upon Derrin.
“Siberian didn’t give me all the details, but apparently she used her powers on him, and what she did, he described only as provocative.”
I clench my jaw. Provocative?
Images of Liv and Siberian reel through my head. What did she do to him? What did he do to her?
The thought makes me furious.
I’ve damaged us so badly; she turned to a threat more dangerous than the Darklings. And the only thing I can do about it is blame myself.
“So, is she in trouble?” Derrin goes on. “Is there anything we need to be aware of?” he hints. “Besides you sending the royal guard and Siberian?”
Emery contemplates Derrin’s questions for a short second. “Besides Darklings, what else should there be?” She looks over at me as I stand there still-stocked, trying not to give away the anger boiling over in my chest at the thought of Liv and Siberian.
“Who is this girl, exactly?” she pries deeper now, and I know we are heading into hazardous territory.
“She’s no one you have to be concerned about,” I dodge the question. “We just need to know if you’ve caught wind of any unusual uprisings?”
She is simultaneously lost and absolutely intrigued as she stares at me decisively. “No, nothing.”
I nod, and release an almost nonexistent sigh of relief.
“Do I have your word she won’t be harmed while she’s in Devonshire?” I phrase it as a question, but she understands my query is so much more than that. It’s a threat.
She nods her displeasure with a small, irritated frown.
We’ve collected the information we came for, and I’ve had enough of Emery’s probing stares. Surrendering to the ever-present pull drawing me back to Liv, and preparing for the shit-storm I’m sure awaits me once I see her, I turn to leave.
“What should I tell my brother?” Emery calls, taunting me. “He wants her.”
I turn back and glare at her. “Tell him he couldn’t handle her, even if he got her.” Then I slam the throne room door behind me, the sound echoing throughout the castle.
That pixie prick is dead.

Review of Games of Fire by Airicka Phoenix!!!

Sophie has enough problems in her life without Spencer turning her blood to fire, without his eyes freezing and burning her, without his hatred of her. Since his migration into the house
next to hers, Sophia Valdez isn’t sure whether she wants to toss him under a bus or kiss that smirking mouth of his. But even as the temperature rises around them, leaping flames of passion, want and desire, everything either has ever known will be shattered by the lurking shadow hounding their every step, wanting revenge.

Spencer Rowth moves to the sleepy town of River Port with his mother and twelve year old sister, Suzy, to escape a deceitful father, an unfaithful girlfriend and a life crumbling much too fast for him to grapple onto only to be smacked upside the head by the last thing he wanted again. Sophie was everything he refused to want. Her temper, her wit, her laugh, her smile, the way her entire body goes up in flames under his hands are things he would rather slam a lid on and forget. Instead, he finds himself falling for the smart-mouth next door. But how long will he have before the evil chasing them catches up? How long before the very thing he never wanted becomes his only thread to sanity? And who is after them? What do they want and why do they want Spencer and Sophie dead?

This book had me from the very first sentence.

Literally!

There are a few reasons I really looked forward to reading this book.  The wonderful and amazing Airicka is a fellow Canadian, like me who I consider a friend.  Also, British Columbia was a favorite spot of my mom's, and it was nice to read about places I was familiar with.  I've never been to BC, but being from Canada, I have heard of a few places there.  I do know it rains A LOT in BC, and was always jealous when they would rarely get snow, when I was always buried in it!

I thought this story was beautiful!  I loved Sophie and the fact that she found the good in everyone.  The book starts out when she notices a new neighbor moving in to the house next door.  This is when her world is turned upside down by the gorgeous Spencer Rowth.  If you've been following me on FB, you know that he is my new book boyfriend.  I'll get into him later though...

Despite what her friends tell her, she is convinced that Spencer hates her.  He's very moody and brooding when he's around her, but to everyone else, he's a normal guy!  She can't figure him out.  Then she takes a chance and sneaks out to a party with her two best friends, Lauren and Jessie.  I wish I had a friend like Lauren, as she had her friends backs not matter what.  She did get a little bit pissed at Sophie at something that really was beyond her control, but all in all, she was a great friend.  At the party, she unwittingly puts herself in danger and it is Spencer who comes to her aid.  After that happens, things between Spencer and Sophie start to happen.

Now... on to Spencer.  I'm not one for tattoos, but I would be accepting for him!  He's beautiful!  But, he's recovering from a broken heart and his parents divorce.  Instead of being honest with Sophie from the beginning, he was doing everything in his power to push her away.  He finally stops pushing when she comes over to help him get away from a few people he doesn't want to see.

Throughout the book, you know she's being stalked.  You just don't know by whom.  When this person starts attacking both her and Spencer when they are together, they start to realize someone is out to get her.  Her parents do everything in their power to hide her, but she is still found, causing her to go completely into hiding with Spencer.  He loves her completely, and makes it known that he will do anything to protect her.  Much to both her parents and his mother's warnings and worries, they stay together.

I was up reading this book until almost 2am on Friday, and finished it early Saturday morning.  I could not stop reading it.  Also, I stopped reading it on Friday at a really pivotal point in the book, so of course, I had to start reading it again the moment I woke up!  There are some mild loves scenes between Spencer and Sophie, which I didn't mind as much as I thought I would.  They are seventeen, and Sophie is discovering everything for the first time.  Plus, they have explosive chemistry!!  You know from the first moment they meet, there is a spark between them that does not go out.  Once Spencer realizes Sophie is not going to hurt him and that he can trust her, he becomes the most loving, romantic, protective boyfriend that she deserves.  Made me wish I had a boyfriend like that in highschool!

It is on the night of the Valentine's Dance at school that Sophie has a night she will never forget.  Because of everything that has happened with the stalker, her parents banish her to the house for the evening.  Knowing how she disappointed she was about not going to the dance, Spencer creates a very special night for her.  It starts out amazing for the two of them, but ends with horror.

Sophie is forced to endure a betrayal by someone who she thought of as a dear friend.  She is taken totally by surprise, when this person tells her what they have been up to in their spare time.  This is why I had to read it first thing this morning!!  I had to know what happened!

As I said, this story was beautiful to me!  Spencer, who is a jerk at the beginning, becomes one of the endearing characters I have seen in a long time.  He proves to her parents that his love for Sophie is absolute and he's not going anywhere.  Her mother, I thought was annoying at times, but she was a typical mother to a seventeen year old.  My own was annoying to me when I was that age!  Wanting more freedom to do things, and being made to feel like a little kid at times when you can't.

There were times I was laughing out loud at Sophie's confusion at Spencer's behavior, just because it was so true!!  He always seems to be there when she needs him, and that makes the attraction between them grow.

I loved this book.  It is definitely one I will read again!  Just to read the interaction between Sophie and Spencer in the beginning so I can have a good laugh!!  They are hilarious!!

You see she comes from a lineage of Light Witches, those who have chosen to help protect and serve between the supernatural world and the human world. Zahara’s hunting skills are usually kept dormant since her parents would prefer she live life as a normal human girl without knowledge of the supernatural world. Before she can return to pretending to be blissfully ignorant, Zahara encounters a problem she isn’t the least equip to handle: Bryan Hamilton, the good looking new co-worker she has to help train. Zahara has no time to focus on how she’s going to explain her double date with her best friend and the enemy they have a tentative truce with to her parents because soon one of the members of Mia and Catalina’s coven is found murdered with a strange tattoo of a snake with wings carved into his arm.

Zahara is then thrown into a whirlwind battle with an angel determined to have revenge against God, an Imago coven she doesn’t think they should trust, and slew of dream-eating fairies and powerful Nephilims, hybrid children of angels and humans, more than happy to rip her to shreds.

Hawt Boys, Oh My!
By Author Annabell Cadiz

Check out the hawt male leads featured in Annabell Cadiz debut novel, LUCIFER, the first book in the SONS OF OLD TRILOGY!

One of the best aspects to writing a book is the characterization and some of the best fun with characters come from the male leads *hehe*

Whether he’s the nerd with a cool style and a good heart or the muscle toned, leather clad male jock or the mysterious bad boy with unresisting charm, a story just isn’t the same with a guy to swoon over, drool over, or giggle over.

When I approached writing the male characters that star in LUCIFER, I wanted them to be smart, funny, cunning, dangerous, and easy on the eyes *wink* (Yes, I’m a shallow person. The first step to recovery is to admit the problem. I’ve never lied about oogling over a nicely muscle toned guy when he walks in the room. No judging people!) I wanted characters that couldn’t be defined as simply bad guy and good guy. I wanted them to have strong qualities and flaws. I like the good of a character and the darker part of them. I like to explore both sides and see what a character would do if presented with the chance to change from one path to another.

So without further delay, allow me to introduce you to the lovely gentleman in LUCIFER.

Bryan Hamilton. He stands at six feet even with a mess of golden brown hair and crystal blue eyes inside an oval shaped face. He has a defined jaw and long eyelashes. He’s chivalrous and sweet with a sexy edge to him. He loves messing around with Zahara and bonds instantly with Becca. Those two together drive Zahara crazy! Bryan is the boyfriend parents would be happy with. I mean the first time he meets Zahara’s father he asks for permission to go out on a date with Zahara, how can you NOT swoon?! *giggle* For some reason I thought Freddie Storma would be great to portray Bryan in a movie. He’s just so humble and sweet but has that look like he’d be the type to sneak you into a concert without paying as a way to impress you *wink*

Rekesh Saint-Louis. Stands at six feet two inches in height with long limbs that glow silver when touched by the moonlight. He has a head full of thick dark brown hair and chocolate colored eyes set in a diamond shaped face with angular cheekbones and full lips. Rekesh is definitely yummy *giggle* He does everything with style, class, and patience. I LOVE the way Rekesh dresses. In every situation he is so put together and so elegant. He is the leader of the most powerful Imago Coven in Florida and even though he runs a rogue supernatural coven, he does it with honor and respect. It’s no wonder Becca fell for him ;) I think Bryton James could make a good fit for Rekesh in a movie adaptation.

(Imago Definition: During the day, they look as normal as any human being. Except they can move ten times faster than a human and have ten times more strength. At night their skin turns to silver due to their connection to the moon. Imagoes were born of a mermaid and a fallen angel who fell in love and gain the power to control the element of water because of their ancestry. )

Solomon Faraday. Solomon stands at six feet two inches with lush, blond hair, dark chestnut-colored eyes in an oval-shaped face framed with high cheekbones. Solomon is an awesome father and husband. He protects his family with every ounce of strength he has and loves his family with the same passion. He’s laid back, charismatic, loving, and dependable. I love how close he is to Zahara and how open he is with her. He’s the hot dad women can’t help but pay attention to ;)

Adam King. Stands at five feet eleven inches with dark brown hair, lovely brown eyes inside an oval-shaped face and has a straight nose. He is the father to Becca and the husband to Ariel. Adam is outgoing, straight forward, and bold. He passed his unique fashion sense down to Becca. He is always true to who he is and a loving father. Adam’s just so loveable. I thought Eric Bana might be a good fit to play Adam in a movie adaptation. He just has the right vibe.

Leanian. Stands at five feet ten inches with forest-green colored eyes, a blue Mohawk, and pierced ears. He’s an Imago and Rekesh’s second in command. Leanian is agile, fast, and terrifyingly quiet. I wouldn’t want to be an enemy of his! Leanian has such a quirky and awkward personality so the nerd in me just adores him *hehe* Aaron Johnson is an AWESOME actor and he’s so versatile. I’m pretty sure he’d do a great job playing Leanian in a film.

Charles Stephens. Stands at six feet six inches, with a head full of thick auburn hair, bright, clear, hazel eyes, and chiseled jawline. He is a fallen angel and a gorgeous one at that! He has this old world feel to him and carries himself with patience, grace, and sexiness. But sorry ladies, he’s already taken! Charles also runs a school for the children of rogue supernaturals who have either been orphaned, abandoned, or who have run away from home and need sanctuary. Charles wanted to do something to redeem his actions. Rick Malambri would fit playing Charles role because he’s seriously hot enough to be an rebellious angel *swoon*

Jason Pierce. A sixteen-year-old Nephilim, half-angel, half-human—who stands at five feet seven inches with a head full of dark-brown hair in a tangled mess and haunting, gray eyes. Jason is a young kid who has lost the only parent who ever took care of him, his mother, and is living at the school Charles runs. He is a lost kid trying to find his way and has a good heart. I thought Jake. T. Austin would be a good actor to portray Jason.

Dustin Michaels. Stands at five feet ten inches with mocha-colored brown eyes, a head full of thick light-brown hair and well-built body. He’s a Cadtellus and has such a sweet bond with his wolf, Bandit, who has a huge personality all his own. Dustin is hell on wheels in fight! I would totally love to have him as a teammate in a battle because he can kick some major butt. He’s got a good heart, mean set of fists, and a quick tongue. He’s a lot of fun ;) I had originally chosen Jesse Williams to portray Rekesh in a movie adaptation of LUCIFER but decided he worked better for Dustin. He just looks like he could play a supernatural creature that can merge with a wolf ;)

(Definition of Cadtellus: The first part of the name is derived from the first three letters of my last name, an idea provided by Hello Kitty (Eve) which I thought would be fun. These supernatural creatures were created from the fallen angel Cathetel. He married a human girl who was bitten by a wolf when she was pregnant and the wolf’s DNA merged with the child. Cathetel became so angry he cursed the existence of wolves and poisoned any wolf he could find with his power. It backfired though because any human the wolves bit would be turned into a Cadtellus. Cathetel was ordered by the Seraphim Council to locate every wolf who contained his power and return them to the Angel Kingdom. Cadtellus have the power to control the element of earth since Cathetel had the ability. They can also merge with the wolf who caused them to change being able to essentially become the wolf. They have incredible speed, sense of smell and hearing, and strength.)

Samyaza. Stands at six feet in height, powerfully built, with broad shoulders, eyes a dark shade of coffee, with bronze circling the irises, and short black hair. Samyaza is a fallen angel and Lucifer’s right hand man. He is the silent type. You can never really tell what he’s thinking. He never gives himself away and always manages to remain calm in any situation, but he’s certainly deadly. Sean Faris just has that set fixed gaze that makes him perfect for the role of Samyaza.

Chamuel. Standing at six feet four inches, body made of pure muscle, eyes the color of rainstorm, and thick spiky black hair. He is a fallen angel and a member of Lucifer’s crew. Chamuel screams sexy! He loves to flirt with anything that resembles a female and wears a skirt. He’s definitely the dangerous bad boy every girl should stay away from but won’t be able to. Colton Haynes was chosen as the actor to portray him because well, just LOOK at him! Would you really argue against seeing him on screen? ;)

Ashadeus. Stands at five feet nine inches with a lanky yet fit frame with long limbs, shaggy light-brown hair, and mesmerizing light-green eyes. He’s a fallen angel and another member of Lucifer’s crew. Ashadeus is so strange and quirky. He isn’t very fond of the human race and has no real patience for them. He’s quite deadly with the powers he possesses and has an awkward sense of humor. David Henrie seems like he would be good to portray Ashadeus in a movie adaptation because he looks like he could play a weird, quirky, hot, fallen angel.

So have I enticed you enough yet to give LUCIFER (SONS OF OLD TRILOGY, #1) a chance? *wink wink* *nudge nudge*
