Review of Oppression by Jessica Therrien
Elyse knows what it means to keep a secret. She's been keeping secrets her whole life. Two, actually. First, that she ages five times slower than the average person, so that while she looks eighteen years old, she's closer to eighty. Second, that her blood has a mysterious power to heal. For Elyse, these things don't make her special. They make life dangerous. After the death of her parents, she's been careful to keep her secret as closely guarded as possible. Now, only one other person in the world knows about her age and ability. Or so she thinks. Elyse is not the only one keeping secrets. There are others like her all over the world, descendants of the very people the Greeks considered gods. She is one of them, and they have been waiting for her for a long time. Among so many of her kind, she should not be very remarkable--except for the prophecy. Some believe she will put an end to traditions, safeguarded by violence, which have oppressed her people for centuries. Others are determined to keep her from doing just that. But for Elyse, the game is just beginning--and she's not entirely willing to play by their rules.
When I heard that Jessica was doing a blog tour, I had to be a part of it!! I've never been part of one, and was honored when she told me yes!! Also, she was so generous to give me an ARC copy of this book before it's release date at the end of February. I found myself on Chapter Three in a matter of half hour!!
This book had me pretty much from the moment I started reading it!! If I could give it another five stars, I would! In this book, you meet Elyse, who is different then the normal teenager. She may look eighteen, but she's actually in her eighties, and she doesn't know why she ages so slowly. Also, she can heal with her blood, which she keeps a secret from people.
I loved this book, just because everytime I started to relax into the story, another twist would get me so engrossed that I had to see what came next. Elyse meets William, who works at the diner below her apartment. Soon, she finds herself in a new relationship with new friends. Through William, she finds out that she's a descendant of the Gods, and the only healer. She has to be kept a secret, or she is in danger.
Soon, Elyse is faced with a very difficult choice to make. There are people in her life that she cares deeply for who need her help. She's torn, as she knows if she helps them, they are in danger by The Council, who govern the descendants with violence. There are strict rules to live by, and she would be breaking them!
I was glued to this book for two days, just because I had to finish it to find out what happened! I was totally engrossed in it!
