Guest Post by Justin Macumber, Author of Minor Magic

Today, I have Justin Macumber visiting the blog today!  He is the author of A Minor Magic, which is available now!!  Wecome Justin!!!

Skylar, the main protagonist of A MINOR MAGIC, is a fifteen year old girl who grew up in a world covered in ash. She has fleeting memories of what life was like before the Burning, mostly of her parents and the joy of their simple lives and love, but after mystical fires tore the sky apart and turned civilization into a smoking ruin, all she knew was fear, pain, and despair. Life was hard as she and her mother traveled an apocalyptic American wasteland, constantly searching for food and shelter, with one eye watching for slavers and the other looking out for strange glimmering areas known as wylds, where the very air glowed and unnatural life stirred. Every day was a struggle for survival.

But then, when Sklyar's mother was on her last legs, they stumbled across a farm hidden away in the deeps of Tennessee. The Lamotts, an elderly couple who owned and worked the land, took Skylar and her mother in, offering them not just respite, but a home. Sadly, Skylar's mother died soon after, yet another victim of the Burning's devastation. Skylar was then adopted by the Lamotts and raised with them on the farm as though she were the daughter they'd never had. For five years she lived with them, considering them as much her family as she had her mother and father, and the time she spent with them was precious.

How strong is love, though, when the fires that once turned the world to ash suddenly spring from the hands of a fifteen year old girl? Can any home last under the possible threat of another Burning? And what bonds can survive the lash of religious conviction when it's turned against the heart? These are questions Skylar will have to face when she discovers what it is to possess A MINOR MAGIC.

Justin R. Macumber, the author of HAYWIRE, is proud to present A MINOR MAGIC, published by Crescent Moon Press. It is available in print and ebook format through Amazon and Barnes & Noble. He is also the creator and co-host of the Dead Robots' Society podcast. He can be found online at -

Book excerpt -
Skylar's eyes filled with a flickering blue light as ghostly flames jetted from her palms, and her screams were lost over the roaring of the blaze. Instinctively, she shook her hands, slapped them against her legs, and then clapped them together to try and extinguish the fire. As her hands touched, the flames vanished. To her astonishment her skin wasn't burned. It wasn't even warm. Sadly, the same couldn't be said for Buster. The dog was a smoking ruin at her feet, one more pile of burnt remains in a world already covered in ash. Her heart broke as she stared down at him. Oh god, she thought. What's happened? What have I done?

"Oh my Lord, girl," a man said behind her. "What did you do?"

Skylar whirled around, her eyes widening in guilt even though she didn't understand what had happened, or how.

"Henry, he jumped at me! I don't know why he did it, and I tried to stop him, but..." She fell silent, her thoughts too scrambled to know what more to say. Buster was a dog she'd loved and cared for ever since coming to live on the farm years ago, and without warning, he had attacked her. When she'd held her hands up to ward him off, blue fire had erupted from them and consumed him as though it was a living, ravenous thing. Nothing like that had ever happened to her before, and she couldn't rightly explain what she didn't understand.
